Alaska Receives $15.6 Million Dollar Increase in Transportation Funds

Washington, D.C., Feb 9 -

Gas tax return will benefit Alaska transportation projects

Alaska Congressman Don Young announced that Alaska will receive an estimated $15.6 million dollar increase in federal transportation dollars as a result of an unexpected surge of gas taxes flowing into the Highway Trust fund.

“The increase in funds will be used for existing transportation improvements throughout Alaska. While the President would like to use these additional funds for social programs, we must continue to address the transportation infrastructure needs of Alaskans,” said Congressman Young who is the Ranking Majority Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

As a result of people driving more and low gas prices, the gas taxes have substantially increased the Highway Trust Fund. Under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA 21), all gas tax receipts will be used for transportation improvements.

“The changes made in TEA 21 direct the trust fund money back to the states where these important dollars will be used to supplement highway and infrastructure projects,” said Rep. Young.
