Alaska Congressman Don Young Named to Aviation Subcommittee

Washington, D.C., Feb 11 -

The Subcommittee deals with aviation issues important to transportation and commerce in Alaska

Alaska Congressman Don Young was named to the House Transportation and Infrastructure’s Aviation Subcommittee. The Subcommittee on Aviation has jurisdiction over all aspects of civil aviation, including safety, infrastructure, labor, and international aviation issues. Rep. Young is the Ranking Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

“The aviation system in Alaska links virtually all communities with economical and dependable year-round transportation both within Alaska and throughout the world. Aviation and Alaska have an interdependent relationship. From the early pioneers in aviation to the current trade which flows through Alaska into the Pacific Rim countries, Alaska continues to play an important role through the use of aviation,” said Alaska Congressman Don Young.

Last year 660 million Americans traveled by air, and it is projected that by the end of the first decade in the new millennium more than one billion passengers will be flying every year in America. That represents a greater than 5% per year increase.

“A great deal can be done to increase our investment in aviation, by adding capacity, increasing productivity of our Air Traffic Control system, while at the same time increasing safety,” said Rep. Young.

The Subcommittees jurisdiction includes all aspects of the Federal Aviation Administration except for research activities. Currently, there are 1,112 designated airports, seaplane bases, and aircraft landing areas in the State of Alaska.
