Congressman Young Announces Red Flag - Alaska Military Exercise Range to Replace Cope Thunder

Washington, D.C., Mar 29 -

Alaska Congressman Don Young Today announced that the Cope Thunder exercise, held in Alaska, will be renamed Red Flag – Alaska. This name change will enhance and provide complementary training on the same level as the current Red Flag exercise held at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. This project will provide the Air Force with superior training capabilities in multiple locations throughout Alaska. The first Red Flag – Alaska will occur next month.

"I was pleased to work with Air Force Chief of Staff General Moseley on the renaming of this project and establishing Red Flag – Alaska as the premier training airspace in North America. Under the old name this project received little recognition from the international and military community. Red Flag - Alaska provides a better range for munitions testing and for ground forces, Stryker and Airborne units, and F – 22 air units that are currently tested in Nevada. This project can only mean economic stability, job growth and a more stable military presence for Alaska and particularly in the Fairbanks area," said Congressman Young.
