Washington, D.C., May 10, 2007 -

I support an increase in the federal minimum wage because working Americans deserve an appropriate increase in their paychecks.  I voted in support of H.R. 2, which calls for increasing the federal minimum wage rate as follows: (1) $5.85 an hour, beginning on the 60th day after enactment of this Act; (2) $6.55 an hour, beginning 12 months after that 60th day; and (3) $7.25 an hour, beginning 24 months after that 60th day.

I disagree with the fact that the House was unable to take this minimum wage issue through the process of a committee hearing which would have given us an opportunity to amend the legislation to make it more balanced with regards to small business owners.  I am pleased that the Senate has looked at the big picture and will include tax incentives for small businesses that will help them adjust to the new minimum wage standards.
