Rep. Young Receives ACT Leadership Award

Washington, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young received the 2009 Leadership Award this morning from the Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) after addressing the delegates at their 2009 ACT Legislative Summit.  The award was given in recognition of the Congressman’s dedication and service to transportation issues.

“As the Congressman from a state with a smaller road system than Washington, D.C., and as former Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, transportation issues are very near and dear to my heart,” said Rep. Young this morning.  “As populations grow, and our roads become more and more congested, public transportation becomes more important to our country.  If just 20 people are riding a bus, that’s 20 less cars on the road!  That may not seem like much, but if you imagine 20 people on every bus across the nation, then that makes quite an impact.

“With SAFETEA-LU, we authorized $52 billion over 5 years which is the highest level of transit investment in history.  We’ve done well, but we can do better.  In the next highway bill, we will increase the level of investment for transit.  By heavily investing in transit with public and private dollars, we reduce congestion, improve air quality, and reduce fuel consumption.

“I am thankful for this award and appreciate having the opportunity to speak with the members of ACT this morning.  I wish them all the best in this Summit as they continue to discuss and share ideas and learn more about our public transportation systems.”

The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) members consists of members from various State Departments of Transportation, local planning agencies, private sector employers, and universities who seek to provide alternative commuting options
