As Libya Burns, Rep. Young Stresses Need For Energy Independence
Mar 9, 2011
As Colonel Gaddafi started bombing Libyan oil pipes today, Alaskan Congressman Don Young stressed the need to increase energy production domestically so as to make the United States more energy independent and reduce our oil imports. In a letter to President Obama, Congressman Young outlined some of the ways Alaska could be significantly contributing to this effort, and to America’s economic strength.
Additionally, Congressman Young sent a letter to his colleagues, Congressman Markey (D-MA), Congressman Welch (D-VT), and Congresswoman DeLauro (D-CT), in response to their letter asking for the release of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). In Rep. Young’s letter, he asserts that if opening a small portion of the SPR would make a difference, then the impact of opening the 10-02 portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would be tremendous to the energy security of our nation.
