Alaska Delegation Announces Grants and Awards

The Alaska Congressional Delegation today announced a series of grants and awards to state groups and departments made by federal agencies.
Alaska Congressman Don Young and Sens. Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski said today that agencies have issued grants and awards worth $8.1 million in recent weeks. The grants and awards include:
Department of Health and Human Services
- The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services received a grant of $414,491 for a campaign to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
- The State of Alaska, Department of Administration Division of Senior Services received a grant of $10,719 for the Information and Referral for Medicare Beneficiaries Project.
- The Child Development Division of the Rural Alaska Community Action Program received a grant of $1,176,884 for the Early Head Start program.
Department of Housing and Urban Development
- The Alaska Housing Finance Corporation received funding in the amount of $45,000 to provide the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation with a Section 8 Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program Coordinator for one year.
- The Gastineau Human Services Corporation received a grant of $30,321 for the Juneau Transitional Housing program to help serve the homeless.
- The Fairbanks Native Association received a grant of $48,577 for the Family Focus Transitional Living Program Expansion to help serve the homeless.
- The Arc of Anchorage received a grant of $96,308 for The Arc of Anchorage Transitional Housing program to help serve the homeless.
Department of Education
- The state of Alaska received a grant of $358,768 as funding for the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Program to provide incentives for schools to raise academic standards.
- The Lower Kuskowim School District of Bethel received a grant of $1,174,572 for the Twenty-First Century Community Learning Center Program.
- The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District received a grant of $394,010 for the Twenty-First Century Community Learning Center Program.
- The Sitka School District received a grant of $102,244 for the Twenty-First Century Community Learning Center Program.
Department of Justice
- The city of Petersburg received a grant of $18,222 for the Local Law Enforcement Block Grants Program to reduce crime and improve public safety.
- The state of Alaska received federal funds in the amount of $1,420,652 to help pay the costs of incarcerating undocumented aliens who have committed serious crimes in the United States.
- The city of Fairbanks received a grant of $41,567 as part of the COPS MORE ‘98 program to add more police officers to community streets.
- The city of Kenai will receive grants from the COPS Universal Hiring Program to pay for 75% of the salary of additional officers hired to patrol the streets.
Department of Commerce
- The Kenai River Cooperative Education Project received a grant of $26,000 to rehabilitate and upgrade the two existing sites and provide signs for the newly constructed stop.
- The North Pacific Fishery Management Council received a grant of $1,979,227 to support its management of the fisheries in the United States Exclusive Economic Zone off the coast of Alaska.
National Endowment for the Humanities
- The Anchorage Concert Association received a grant of $40,000 to support the presentation of the Pacific Northwest Ballet.
- The Anchorage Museum Association received a grant of $10,500 to support the Museum’s “Light Art Festival” during the winter of 1999-2000.
- Juneau Jazz & Classics received a grant of $7,500 to support the production and presentation of a 10-day festival of classical and jazz music.
- The Sitka Summer Music Festival received a grant of $10,000 to support the presentation of professional chamber music through touring concerts in urban and rural communities of Alaska.
- The University of Alaska at Anchorage received a grant of $7,000 to support publication expenses and related costs for a special issue of Alaska Quarterly Review.
- The Perseverance Theater received a grant of $30,000 from the Nathan Cummings Foundation to develop a New Theater Education and Integration Program.
- The Perseverance Theater received a grant of $100,000 from M.J Murdock Charitable Trust for a three-year sponsorship of KING ISLAND CHRISTMAS.
- The state of Alaska received $602,909 to provide support for library services under the Museum and Library Services Act of 1996.
