Alaska Delegation Announces Grants and Awards

The Alaska Congressional Delegation today announced a series of grants and awards to state groups and departments made by federal agencies.

Alaska Congressman Don Young and Sens. Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski said today that agencies have issued grants and awards worth $7.436 million in recent weeks. The grants and awards include:

Department of Housing and Urban Development



  • The state of Alaska received an Indian Housing Block Grant in the amount of $4,995,707 for the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996.

Department of Justice



  • The Alaska Violent Crimes Compensation Board received a grant in the amount of $265,000 as a part of the Crime Victim Compensation project.


  • The Fairbanks Native Association received a grant in the amount of $199,985 for the Family Focus Juvenile Mentoring Program to help adolescents at risk of educational failure or juvenile delinquency.


  • The University of Alaska in Anchorage received a grant in the amount of $485,581 for the Alaska Native Technical Assistance and Resource Center. This project reaches out to Alaskan native and rural communities through a criminal justice cooperative extension program.


  • The Alaska Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault received a grant in the amount of $973,000 for the Crime Victim Assistance Grant Program to enhance Crime Victim Services in Alaska.

National Endowment for the Humanities



  • The Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks received a grant in the amount of $4,384 from the Alaska Humanities Forum to support the lecture series Topics in Language Maintenance.

Corporation for Public Broadcasting



  • The Alaska public broadcasting service received a grant in the amount of $150,000 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. This project will assist radio and television stations by offering financial reporting, technical support, and policy leadership.

Department of Energy



  • The state of Alaska, Department of Community and Regional affairs, received a grant in the amount of $123,000 for the Alaska Power and Telephone Inc. to connect Haines, Alaska to Skagway, Alaska.

Department of the Interior



  • The state of Alaska received a grant in the amount of $239,632 from the Interior Department’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. The grant is to assist Alaska in funding the state’s abandoned mine lands program.
