Statement of Alaska Congressman Don Young, Regarding the President's Budget
Washington, D.C.,
Feb 1, 1999 -
Alaska Congressman Don Young responded today to the President's Fiscal Year 2000 budget proposal:
The legislative process will now begin with the release of the President's agenda and priorities outlined in his Fiscal Year 2000 budget proposal. The President's budget spends $1.77 trillion, and proposes $82 billion in tax increases over the next five years.
"I believe Congress and the President can find consensus on several budget priorities that will benefit the American people. However, the President has shown a lack of respect for the American taxpayer. In fact, his proposal provides for no income tax relief for 15 years, and instead proposes significant tax increases over the next five years," said Rep. Young.
"The President has indicated his interest in cooperating on initiatives such as preserving Social Security for our seniors, improving education for our youth and protecting the readiness of our armed forces," said Alaska Congressman Don Young.
"However, the devil is in the details on the President's budget. Where we believe in returning control and money to taxpayers, the President's proposal increases federal control, and takes more money from working Americans."
