Congressman Young Congratulates the State of Alaska on its 48th Birthday

Congressman for all Alaska Don Young today made the following statement concerning Alaska’s 48th Statehood Anniversary:

"I would like to congratulate the State of Alaska on 48 years of being what Alaskans call the Last Frontier," said Congressman Young earlier this afternoon. "When I reflect back on the book, The Call of the Wild, I relive my fond memories of what caused me to make Alaska my home. There is no other state in the union that is as great and unique as Alaska. The name "Alaska" itself is derived from the Aleut word "Alyeska" meaning "Great Land"; our Alaska Natives always knew that there was something special about Alaska."

"Alaska’s admission to Statehood took place on January 3, 1959. Since then, the state has evolved over the past 48 years to become a world class provider of Alaska’s rich resources such as oil and fisheries. I am proud to represent a state so young but so critical to our nation. I look forward to our future and how we will continue to make our mark as a Great Land"
