Congressman Young Votes to Make Water Quality a Priority

Washington, DC – Congressman for All Alaska Don Young voted in favor of three clean water infrastructure bills this week.  These bills were H.R. 720, the Water Quality Financing Act of 2007 (of which Congressman Young was an original cosponsor), H.R. 569, the Water Quality Investment Act of 2007, and H.R. 700, the Health Communities Water Supply Act of 2007.  Each of these bills seeks to better our Nation’s wastewater infrastructure system.

“These bills are a step in the right direction to address our country’s wastewater needs,” said Congressman Young.  “Our current infrastructure is aging and in need of repair.  These bills will help larger communities such as Anchorage as much as smaller communities in rural Alaska.  They increase the support for smaller and disadvantaged communities and encourage improved management of our current facilities.  We have made great gains in water quality in America, but unless we act now to improve our antiquated infrastructure systems, we risk taking great steps back.  Clean water for Americans needs to be a priority, and these bills do that.”

H.R. 720

  • Authorizes appropriations of $20 billion over the next five years for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund.

H.R. 569

  • Extends the authorization of funding for Federal grants to control combined sewer overflows and sanitary sewer overflows.

H.R. 700

  • Will reauthorize appropriations for the Alternative Water Sources Act of 2000, a program within the Environmental Protection Agency that funds water supply projects in areas where there is critical need.
