Congressman Young Cosponsors Legislation to Increase Child Care Tax Credit"Child care is not a partisan issue." -Rep. Young

The Right Start Child Care and Education Act of 2007 (H.R. 2021), of which Congressman for All Alaska Don Young is an original cosponsor, was introduced in the United State House of Representatives this week. This legislation seeks to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to increase the credit for employers establishing workplace child care facilities, to increase the child care credit to encourage greater use of quality child care services, and to provide incentives for students to earn child care-related degrees and to work in child care facilities. “Child care is not a partisan issue,†explained Congressman Young. “With so many single and working parents, many of our Nation’s children are dependant on the type of reliable and safe surroundings that child care facilities can provide. Generally speaking, children in child care programs perform better in school, and show fewer behavioral problems. In the last 25 years, child care tax increases have occurred only once, and have not kept up with inflation. This bill does three important things: brings the federal Dependent and Child Care Tax Credit up to date; increases the business tax credit to give more incentive for employers to construct or offer workplace child care facilities; and encourages more college graduates to work in child care centers. It helps ease the expense and burden on America’s working families, and that’s the kind of bill I can get behind.â€
