As a former teacher, I am committed to providing our nation’s children with the best possible education. I firmly believe in the original goals of the No Child Left Behind Act but I understand that a “one size fits all†approach to student achievement is not possible. Congress passed NCLB five years ago and it is time we address the law’s shortcomings and pass meaningful reform legislation. It is for this reason that I introduced H.R. 648, the No Child Left Behind Improvements Act of 2007. This legislation will improve accountability for the academic performance of children enrolled in the nation’s public schools. My bill builds on the major reforms of the existing law and offers improvements that address many of the unintended consequences of the federal legislation while holding states and school districts accountable.
