Rep. Young Continues Strong Support of Troops and Veterans

“They (the Democrats) have finally been backed into such a corner that they are forced to bring the full funding to the House floor for a vote.” -Rep. Don Young

Alaskan Congressman Don Young voted in favor of the Fiscal Year 2009 Iraq War Supplemental funding bill this evening. This bill was brought up as two amendments to H.R. 2642, the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act of 2008.

The amendments are as follows:

Amendment #1 - $165.4 billion for the Department of Defense full-funding for our men and women in uniform

Amendment #2 – Veterans Education benefits (which, thanks to Republican efforts, now extends to the families of veterans as well), Unemployment Insurance Extension and Medicaid Services among other things.

"I am very relieved that we are finally getting this done," said Rep. Young. "The Democrats have been playing political games with the funding of our troops by holding funding hostage to get what they wanted. They have finally been backed into such a corner that they are forced to bring the full funding to the House floor for a vote. Their political theatre will not be tolerated when it comes to the safety and well-being of our heroic men and women fighting overseas so that we can have the freedom to stand in free debate today. It will be nice to know that as we head into the Fourth of July holiday, and celebrate the freedom of our Nation, that the incredible men and women of the Armed Service will be receiving the full funding they need to do the job they proudly volunteered to do. I have nothing less than the utmost respect and support for our servicemen and women, and their families, and hope this brings them some peace of mind in an otherwise nerve-wracking time. The passage of this bill shows Congress’s strong commitment to them."
