House Democrats Pass 17th Tax Hike in 110th Congress

Largest in American History

House Democrats passed the FY09 Budget Resolution this evening, marking their 17th tax hike of the 110th Congress. At a time when home heating oil prices are between $6-8 a gallon in rural Alaska, gas is over $3 a gallon, the dollar is declining to an all-time low, and cost of living prices are sky rocketing, this version of the budget includes a tax hike of $683 billion, the largest in American history. As families are stretching their dollars, the Democrat’s are now asking them to bankroll a litany of new programs, and doing nothing to fix the ones currently in place such as Social Security, Medicare, and No Child Left Behind.

"This version of the budget is absolutely disgraceful," said Rep. Young. "The taxes on Alaskans will be raised by roughly $2,896! The Majority party thinks we need to raise taxes in order to fund all of their programs? Here’s a fix that will not only alleviate the burden of energy prices but also pad the budget: How about we finally open ANWR to energy exploration? $138 billion in federal tax revenue is lying right there on that small piece of land in northern Alaska. I fail to understand why the Majority would rather put yet another burden on Mr. and Mrs. America as opposed to exploring our God-given natural resources and becoming more self-sufficient. This budget is nothing short of irresponsible and I cannot in good conscience support it."

In addition to a $683 billion tax hike, this version of the budget will:

  • Raise marginal rates for all workers
  • Eliminate the 10 percent bracket for low-income earners
  • Increase taxes by $500 per child
  • Re-impose the marriage and death tax
  • Eliminate incentives for investment in U.S. business
  • Increase discretionary spending by 8.8 percent over 2008

As an example of the real costs facing Alaskans, currently in Barrow, Alaska, the largest city in the North Slope Borough with 4,429 residents, a gallon of gas costs $4.45 and a gallon of milk costs $8.99. In Congressman Young’s hometown of Fort Yukon a gallon of milk is currently going for $11.58. Finally, in Fairbanks, the second largest city in Alaska, a gallon of milk is $5.49.
