Washington, D.C.,
November 5, 2007
Alaskan Congressman Don Young reiterated his continuing support for our Nation’s and Alaska’s veterans today by voting in favor of five bills that seek to assist those who have so bravely served our country. Young, a veteran himself, was a cosponsor of H.Res.744 which recognizes the contribution of Native American veterans. "As always, I am pleased to be a part of any legislation that aids our Nation’s veterans," said Rep. Young. "All of the bills brought to the floor today recognize the efforts and sacrifice of those who have put all on the line in the name of American freedom. Veterans compose a very special sector of our population, and it is our Nation’s duty to take care of them the way they have so selflessly taken care of us. "I am pleased to be a cosponsor on a bill recognizing Native American veterans. This past summer, I had the honor of presenting a posthumous bronze medal to the family of a brave Alaska Native soldier who heroically gave his life during the Vietnam War. Getting to know his story and speaking with his family and friends made this especially personal for me. Additionally, I traveled to Camp Shelby a few weeks ago to welcome back soldiers of the Alaska Army National Guard who had been deployed in Kuwait and Iraq for the past year, many of whom were Alaska Native. I am proud to say that every one of those soldiers that deployed made it home safely, and I support as well as respect them, their families, and all they do for the United States and its people." The bills brought to the floor, and voted for by Rep. Young are the following: H.R. 513 - National Heroes Credit Protection Act H.Res. 770 - Expressing support for designation of a National Veterans History Project Week to encourage public participation in a nationwide project that collects and preserves the stories of the men and women who served our nation in times of war and conflict H.Con.Res. 60 - Expressing support for the goals of Veterans Educate Today's Students (VETS) Day, and for other purposes H.Res. 744 - Recognizing the contributions of Native American veterans and calling upon the President to issue a proclamation urging the people of the United States to observe a day in honor of Native American veterans H.R. 797 - Dr. James Allen Veteran Vision Equity Act #### |
