Washington, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young voted in favor of the Coburn Amendment to H.R. 627, which would prohibit the Secretary of the Interior from banning the possession of a firearm in a National Park, in compliance with state law. 

“The Second Amendment grants us the fundamental right to protect ourselves,” said Rep. Young.  “Murders, rapes, robberies, and assaults happen each year on National Park Service land, and the victims don’t have the right to carry a firearm and protect themselves.  Anyone who knows me knows that I will always defend our right to bear arms and protect ourselves and our loved ones.  Current Park Service Regulations require that firearms transported in national parks be unloaded and encased; this makes them useless!  Guns are allowed in most park areas in Alaska and that should be the case across the country in accordance with their state gun laws.  I will always vote for legislation that errs on the side of the Second Amendment.”

• In 2007, Rep. Young wrote a letter with Chairman Rahall asking President Bush to implement a rule allowing the possession of firearms in National Parks.
• Rep. Young is an original cosponsor of H.R. 1684, the Preservation of the Second Amendment in National Parks and National Wildlife Refuges Act.
