$9.65 Million In Transportation Grants Awarded To Alaska
Washington,
June 17, 2010
Washington, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young is happy to announce the following two grants awarded to Alaskan entities, originating from the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU):
The specific language from SAFETEA-LU allocates $3.5 million for the ten national transportation centers (including UAF), and $15 million for ferry systems located in Alaska and Hawaii, per year, for the life of the bill. “This funding is incredibly important to the State of Alaska,” said Rep. Young. “Not only is Alaska one-fifth the size of the United States, with a smaller road system than our smallest state (Rhode Island), but we are also an Arctic state with extreme weather patterns. Because of this, Alaska faces very unique transportation challenges. Funding for both of these projects is an integral part of the overall transportation plan for the state and will assist in constantly improving our system.” Congress recently extended SAFETEA-LU through the end of 2010 by way of the HIRE Act. #### |
