Statement from Rep. Young on Release of Shell’s Revised OCS Air Permits

f t # e
Washington D.C., July 1, 2011 | comments

Alaskan Congressman Don Young released the following statement today regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) release of draft air quality permits for Shell Oil Company's exploratory oil drilling operations in Alaska's Arctic Outer Continental Shelf:

“While I applaud the EPA’s decision to release these permits today, I can’t help but be frustrated by the never-ending process set forth by the EPA. Shell has been waiting for six years to start producing from these leases and with gas prices well over $3.00 in most parts of America and over $4.00 in Alaska, the need for American energy is as high as ever. Let’s face it, North Slope production in Alaska is declining and it’s crucial that we look for new areas to develop Alaska’s vast resources. Alaska stands ready and willing to supply America with the energy to power our economy well into the future.”

The draft permits are subject to a 30-day public comment period as well as a public hearing before the EPA issues final permits.
