Rep. Young Supports Federally Sponsored Plebiscite For Puerto Rico in President’s FY14 Budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Alaskan Congressman Don Young released the following statement in support of President Obama’s request for $2.5 million to conduct the first federally-sponsored plebiscite in Puerto Rico history:

“In November 2012, the people of Puerto Rico took a significant step forward.  In a local plebiscite, 54 percent of voters rejected the current territory status and more voters expressed a preference for statehood than for any other status option,” Rep. Young said. “As Congressman for Alaska—which, along with Hawaii, were the last territories to become states, I have long been a champion of self-determination for our fellow U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico.  That is why I am pleased the President has responded to the local plebiscite by requesting $2.5 million to conduct a federally-sponsored vote among options that would resolve the territory’s status.  I intend to support this request.”
