Rep. Young Retains Seat as Head of the Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs Subcommittee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Natural Resources Committee today released its comprehensive list of Republican subcommittee assignments for the 114th Congress, which once again named Alaskan Congressman Don Young as the head of the subcommittee responsible for legislation and policy pertaining to Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs. “I’m honored to serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs of the House Natural Resources Committee for the 114th Congress,” said Congressman Don Young. “This committee directly oversees legislation that impacts more than 100,000 Alaska residents and I’m proud to lead the many important discussions we will have this Congress. In the coming months, I plan to advance a robust legislative slate focused on empowering Native communities, promoting economic opportunities on tribal land and insular areas, an upholding the federal trust relationship for America’s Native Americans. The 114th Congress includes a reshuffling of Natural Resources Committee issues and jurisdiction, resulting in the addition of Insular Affairs and Native Hawaiian policy to the subcommittee chaired by Congressman Young for the last four years. In addition to being named to serve on the Federal Lands Subcommittee and Water, Power, and Oceans Subcommittee, Congressman Young has been tapped to lead the fight on the reauthorization of national fisheries policy known as the Magnusson-Stevens Act. “I appreciate Chairman Bishop’s support and consideration in allowing me to serve on the three specific subcommittees I requested,” said Congressman Young. “These subcommittees play a significant role in developing Alaska focused policy and will empower me to protect and uphold our many interests.” In a press release announcing the Natural Resource Committee Republican leadership and Subcommittee assignments, Chairman Rob Bishop (R-UT) said the following: “Promoting the responsible development of our domestic energy resources, active management of Federal lands, greater collaboration with our state, tribal and local partners, and examining federal regulatory overreach into these areas will be at forefront of the Natural Resources Committee agenda in the 114th Congress.
