KTUU: Murkowski & Sullivan push back: ‘What we heard is that government is the answer’

By Kyle Hopkins

Alaska’s delegation is here and accounted for. After Rep. Don Young’s reaction to the State of the Union, Sens. Lisa Murkowski weighed in during the Channel 2 Newshour and through their offices with critiques of the president.

Sullivan called the president “delusional” during the Newshour and in an expanded statement provided by his office:

“I had hoped that President Obama’s address this evening would demonstrate that he had taken to heart the lessons of the 2014 elections and was willing to work with Congress to govern responsibly. Unfortunately, what the American people heard tonight were the same failed policies of the past six years – more unsustainable spending, more burdensome taxes, more job-killing regulations, and the President even touted how much federal land he has locked up.

“On the foreign policy front, the President painted a picture of the international environment that bordered on the delusional.  Whether it’s Iran, ISIS, or Russia, Alaskans remain very concerned about threats to our national security.

“It is time for a new direction. America’s hope lies in the strength of our people, not the size of our federal bureaucracy. That is why I’ll be partnering with my colleagues in the Senate to empower local communities through common sense conservative solutions like greater access to federal lands for responsible resource development, small business relief and regulatory reform, and restoring the rule of law. I urge President Obama to join us in these endeavors and I look forward to working with anyone who wants to do what’s right for Alaska and for our country.”
