***Media Advisory*** Congressman Young to Hold Subcommittee Hearing on Three Bills, Including Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs and Chairman Don Young will hold a legislative hearing on Wednesday, June 17th at 7 am (AK), 11 am  (ET) to discuss the following bills:

  • H.R. 2386, the Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act, was introduced by Rep. Don Young on May 15, 2015. The bill would recognize five native communities in Southeast Alaska under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) 2, and authorize each to form an Urban Corporation. The bill also authorizes each newly formed Urban Corporation to receive certain settlement land pursuant to ANCSA.

 

  • H.R. 1157, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians Land Transfer Act of 2015, was introduced by Rep. Doug LaMalfa on March 23, 2015. The bill would provide for the transfer of title to an approximately 1,400-acre tract of land to the United States to be held in trust for the benefit of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians (“Chumash” or “tribe”).

 

  • H.R. 2538, the Lytton Rancheria Homelands Act of 2015, was introduced by Rep. Huffman on May 21, 2015. The bill would take into trust approximately 511 acres of non-contiguous fee land owned by the Lytton Rancheria adjacent to the town Windsor, CA (Sonoma County).

The IIANA Subcommittee will convene on Wednesday, June 17th at 7 am (AK), 11 am  (ET) in room 1324 Longworth House Office Building. The hearing is open to the public and a live video stream will be broadcast on the House Natural Resources Committee website.
