Congressman Don Young Issues Statement Following House Vote on COVID-19 Legislation
Washington, May 15, 2020
Washington, D.C. – Today, following a House vote on H.R. 6800, the HEROES Act, Alaska Congressman Don Young issued the following statement:
"This is a very serious time for our nation, and it deserves a legislative response that is equally serious. Unfortunately, that is not what happened today. The bill we voted on is nothing more than a partisan wish list, written behind closed doors by Speaker Pelosi without the full input of relevant committees or the 434 other Members of the House. Very frankly, this is not how the legislative process works. Our nation needs bipartisan relief right now. COVID-19 is devastating our economy; hospitals and healthcare workers are risking their lives for our loved ones, and small businesses across America are shutting their doors. Instead, House Democrats gave us a bill that is only meant to appease the Speaker's base and stands no chance of becoming law. Too many people in this country are hurting. We need to be working on legislation that will help us combat COVID-19 so that Americans can get back to their daily lives as quickly as possible. Today's bill was a political stunt, and this is no time for games. Because this bill stands no chance of passing the Senate – and would be vetoed by the President – debate over federal relief legislation will continue. I will keep working with my friends on both sides of the aisle on policy solutions that keep Alaskans safe and turn the tide in our fight against this ongoing pandemic."
