Alaska Congressman Don Young Issues Statement Following De-Listing of the Gray Wolf from the Endangered Species Act

Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced the successful recovery and subsequent de-listing of the gray wolf from the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Following their de-listing, state and tribal wildlife management agencies will resume responsibility for sustainable management and protection of gray wolves in states with gray wolf populations. After the announcement, Alaska Congressman Don Young issued the following statement:

"The people are always the best stewards of their land, and very frankly, Alaskans know that better than anyone. The de-listing of the gray wolf re-affirms that state, local, and tribal governments in the Lower 48 should bear responsibility for hunting, fishing, and wildlife management. As Congress intended, wildlife management under the Endangered Species Act should be based on sound science. It has been well-established that unchecked gray wolf populations jeopardize the balance of our ecosystem. Unless properly managed, gray wolves threaten caribou, moose, elk, and other wildlife populations. I am very pleased that President Trump has shifted the gray wolf's management to state and tribal organizations. Restoring local powers has always been one of my highest priorities, and I will continue working in Congress and with the Administration to ensure that the people are trusted to make decisions for themselves,” said Young.
